Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy
Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy aims to achieve a 22 per cent reduction in carbon emissions in the emirate of Abu Dhabi by 2027.
This strategy is aligned with the objectives of the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative. It seeks to strengthen the climate resilience and agility of key sectors, positioning Abu Dhabi as one of the most climate resilient places in the region.
Pillars
The strategy is based on the following two pillars:
- mitigation – this involves reducing climate emissions while maintaining economic growth. It includes measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through decarbonisation and innovative technologies, and major renewable energy production projects to accelerate Abu Dhabi’s journey towards net zero by 2050.
- adaptation – this pillar aims to enhance the resilience and agility of key economic sectors including energy, health, infrastructure and the environment, against climate risks.
To achieve its objectives, the strategy will implement 81 initiatives and 12 key strategic projects. They include:
- low emissions vehicles - Promoting low-carbon transport options to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the land transport sector
- mangrove restoration - Expanding initiatives to grow and maintain mangrove areas using both traditional methods and innovative methods, including drones
- green procurement - Encouraging the production and procurement of sustainable products and ensuring their market competitiveness through incentives and price privileges
- Al Dhafra PV solar plant - Developing Al Dhafra PV solar plant to be the world’s largest single-site solar plant generating 2.0 GW of power; it will increase Abu Dhabi’s solar power capacity to more than 3.0GW, displacing 2.4 metric tonnes of CO2 and powering 160,000 homes.
