Launched in September 2022, ‘Dubai Research and Development Programme’ (R&D) aims to support key economic sectors and create new opportunities for growth across Dubai. It provides a comprehensive framework for research, development and innovation across the emirate.
Objectives
The objectives of the programme include:
- creating knowledge and innovation-driven solutions for the most significant local and global challenges
- increasing the productivity of existing sectors by providing new paths to enhance their economic value
- identifying significant radical changes and ways to address them
- enhancing the emirate’s readiness to accommodate new sectors that have the potential to boost Dubai’s economic resilience.
Pillars
The programme is based on four pillars:
- providing a roadmap and a comprehensive governance model for Dubai’s research, development and innovation system
- setting Dubai’s top priorities for research and development (R&D)
- governing all R&D projects and initiatives, their relevant funding and investments
- increasing Dubai’s expenditure on R&D and maximising the private sector’s engagement.
Priorities
The programme outlined the following four priorities:
- health and well-being
- environmental technology
- smart built infrastructure
- space and augmented human-machine intelligence.
The initiatives in the above areas will be supported by the adoption of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, robotics, drones, 3D printing and others.
